Which of the following is not an integer?

77% Answer Correctly

0

\({1 \over 2}\)

-1

1

Solution

An integer is any whole number, including zero. An integer can be either positive or negative. Examples include -77, -1, 0, 55, 119.

2

How many 7-passenger vans will it take to drive all 97 members of the football team to an away game?

81% Answer Correctly
6 vans
14 vans
9 vans
8 vans

Solution

Calculate the number of vans needed by dividing the number of people that need transported by the capacity of one van:

vans = \( \frac{97}{7} \) = 13\(\frac{6}{7}\)

So, it will take 13 full vans and one partially full van to transport the entire team making a total of 14 vans.

On average, the center for a basketball team hits 40% of his shots while a guard on the same team hits 55% of his shots. If the guard takes 10 shots during a game, how many shots will the center have to take to score as many points as the guard assuming each shot is worth the same number of points?

42% Answer Correctly
19
13
11
18

Solution
If the guard hits 55% of his shots and takes 10 shots he'll make:

guard shots made = shots taken x \( \frac{\text{% made}}{100} \) = 10 x \( \frac{55}{100} \) = \( \frac{55 x 10}{100} \) = \( \frac{550}{100} \) = 5 shots

The center makes 40% of his shots so he'll have to take:

shots made = shots taken x \( \frac{\text{% made}}{100} \)
shots taken = \( \frac{\text{shots taken}}{\frac{\text{% made}}{100}} \)

to make as many shots as the guard. Plugging in values for the center gives us:

center shots taken = \( \frac{5}{\frac{40}{100}} \) = 5 x \( \frac{100}{40} \) = \( \frac{5 x 100}{40} \) = \( \frac{500}{40} \) = 13 shots

to make the same number of shots as the guard and thus score the same number of points.

4

Which of the following is an improper fraction?

70% Answer Correctly

\(1 {2 \over 5} \)

\({2 \over 5} \)

\({a \over 5} \)

\({7 \over 5} \)

Solution

A rational number (or fraction) is represented as a ratio between two integers, a and b, and has the form \({a \over b}\) where a is the numerator and b is the denominator. An improper fraction (\({5 \over 3} \)) has a numerator with a greater absolute value than the denominator and can be converted into a mixed number (\(1 {2 \over 3} \)) which has a whole number part and a fractional part.

5

Which of the following statements about exponents is false?

47% Answer Correctly

b1 = b

all of these are false

b0 = 1

b1 = 1

Solution

A number with an exponent (be) consists of a base (b) raised to a power (e). The exponent indicates the number of times that the base is multiplied by itself. A base with an exponent of 1 equals the base (b1 = b) and a base with an exponent of 0 equals 1 ( (b0 = 1).
