Damon loaned Charlie $1,100 at an annual interest rate of 6%. If no payments are made, what is the interest owed on this loan at the end of the first year?

74% Answer Correctly
$65
$21
$55
$66

Solution

The yearly interest charged on this loan is the annual interest rate multiplied by the amount borrowed:

interest = annual interest rate x loan amount

i = (\( \frac{6}{100} \)) x $1,100
i = 0.06 x $1,100
i = $66

On average, the center for a basketball team hits 35% of his shots while a guard on the same team hits 40% of his shots. If the guard takes 30 shots during a game, how many shots will the center have to take to score as many points as the guard assuming each shot is worth the same number of points?

42% Answer Correctly
26
34
31
33

Solution
If the guard hits 40% of his shots and takes 30 shots he'll make:

guard shots made = shots taken x \( \frac{\text{% made}}{100} \) = 30 x \( \frac{40}{100} \) = \( \frac{40 x 30}{100} \) = \( \frac{1200}{100} \) = 12 shots

The center makes 35% of his shots so he'll have to take:

shots made = shots taken x \( \frac{\text{% made}}{100} \)
shots taken = \( \frac{\text{shots taken}}{\frac{\text{% made}}{100}} \)

to make as many shots as the guard. Plugging in values for the center gives us:

center shots taken = \( \frac{12}{\frac{35}{100}} \) = 12 x \( \frac{100}{35} \) = \( \frac{12 x 100}{35} \) = \( \frac{1200}{35} \) = 34 shots

to make the same number of shots as the guard and thus score the same number of points.

What is \( \sqrt{\frac{4}{49}} \)?

70% Answer Correctly
1\(\frac{3}{4}\)
\(\frac{2}{7}\)
1\(\frac{2}{3}\)
1

Solution

To take the square root of a fraction, break the fraction into two separate roots then calculate the square root of the numerator and denominator separately:

\( \sqrt{\frac{4}{49}} \)
\( \frac{\sqrt{4}}{\sqrt{49}} \)
\( \frac{\sqrt{2^2}}{\sqrt{7^2}} \)
\(\frac{2}{7}\)

What is 8c5 - 7c5?

71% Answer Correctly
15c25
c5
15c5
c-5

Solution

To add or subtract terms with exponents, both the base and the exponent must be the same. In this case they are so subtract the coefficients and retain the base and exponent:

8c5 - 7c5
(8 - 7)c5
c5

5

What is the least common multiple of 2 and 10?

73% Answer Correctly
10
4
19
16

Solution

The first few multiples of 2 are [2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20] and the first few multiples of 10 are [10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90]. The first few multiples they share are [10, 20, 30, 40, 50] making 10 the smallest multiple 2 and 10 have in common.
