Which of the following is a mixed number?
\({7 \over 5} \) |
|
\(1 {2 \over 5} \) |
|
\({5 \over 7} \) |
|
\({a \over 5} \) |
A rational number (or fraction) is represented as a ratio between two integers, a and b, and has the form \({a \over b}\) where a is the numerator and b is the denominator. An improper fraction (\({5 \over 3} \)) has a numerator with a greater absolute value than the denominator and can be converted into a mixed number (\(1 {2 \over 3} \)) which has a whole number part and a fractional part.
If a rectangle is twice as long as it is wide and has a perimeter of 48 meters, what is the area of the rectangle?
| 98 m2 | |
| 128 m2 | |
| 2 m2 | |
| 32 m2 |
The area of a rectangle is width (w) x height (h). In this problem we know that the rectangle is twice as long as it is wide so h = 2w. The perimeter of a rectangle is 2w + 2h and we know that the perimeter of this rectangle is 48 meters so the equation becomes: 2w + 2h = 48.
Putting these two equations together and solving for width (w):
2w + 2h = 48
w + h = \( \frac{48}{2} \)
w + h = 24
w = 24 - h
From the question we know that h = 2w so substituting 2w for h gives us:
w = 24 - 2w
3w = 24
w = \( \frac{24}{3} \)
w = 8
Since h = 2w that makes h = (2 x 8) = 16 and the area = h x w = 8 x 16 = 128 m2
A circular logo is enlarged to fit the lid of a jar. The new diameter is 45% larger than the original. By what percentage has the area of the logo increased?
| 30% | |
| 32\(\frac{1}{2}\)% | |
| 15% | |
| 22\(\frac{1}{2}\)% |
The area of a circle is given by the formula A = πr2 where r is the radius of the circle. The radius of a circle is its diameter divided by two so A = π(\( \frac{d}{2} \))2. If the diameter of the logo increases by 45% the radius (and, consequently, the total area) increases by \( \frac{45\text{%}}{2} \) = 22\(\frac{1}{2}\)%
This property states taht the order of addition or multiplication does not mater. For example, 2 + 5 and 5 + 2 are equivalent.

The commutative property states that, when adding or multiplying numbers, the order in which they're added or multiplied does not matter. For example, 3 + 4 and 4 + 3 give the same result, as do 3 x 4 and 4 x 3.
If all of a roofing company's 10 workers are required to staff 5 roofing crews, how many workers need to be added during the busy season in order to send 7 complete crews out on jobs?
| 11 | |
| 4 | |
| 3 | |
| 17 |
In order to find how many additional workers are needed to staff the extra crews you first need to calculate how many workers are on a crew. There are 10 workers at the company now and that's enough to staff 5 crews so there are \( \frac{10}{5} \) = 2 workers on a crew. 7 crews are needed for the busy season which, at 2 workers per crew, means that the roofing company will need 7 x 2 = 14 total workers to staff the crews during the busy season. The company already employs 10 workers so they need to add 14 - 10 = 4 new staff for the busy season.
