An overcooled engine is less efficient. During the power stroke, combustion heat pushes down the piston. Modern car engines are cooled by liquid which circulates through the engine block and cylinder heads absorbing excess heat. Cylinders act as a guide for the pistons that translate the heat energy of combustion into the mechanical energy necessary to move a vehicle.
