To combine like terms, add or subtract the coefficients (the numbers that come before the variables) of terms that have the same variable raised to the same exponent.

3a + 7a = 10a

The circumference of a circle is the distance around its perimeter and equals π (approx. 3.14159) x diameter: c = π d. The area of a circle is π x (radius)² : a = π r².

According to the Pythagorean theorem, the hypotenuse squared is equal to the sum of the two perpendicular sides squared:

c² = a² + b²
c² = 4² + 7²
c² = 16 + 49
c² = 65
c = \( \sqrt{65} \)

To multiply monomials, multiply the coefficients (the numbers that come before the variables) of each term, add the exponents of like variables, and multiply the different variables together.

(4a)(8ab) + (9a²)(4b)
(4 x 8)(a x a x b) + (9 x 4)(a² x b)
(32)(a¹⁺¹ x b) + (36)(a²b)
32a²b + 36a²b
68a²b

An equation is two expressions separated by an equal sign. The key to solving equations is to repeatedly do the same thing to both sides of the equation until the variable is isolated on one side of the equal sign and the answer on the other.
